Reread 2022: Still loved it.

I stayed up late to finish this. I think that sentence alone tells you how much I loved it.

Daisy Jones charts the rise and fall of the fictional rock and roll band 'The Six' and titular singer Daisy from their small beginnings to world success. It's the ups and downs of life on the road. The drugs, the women, the songs. The found family. And the sacrifices made for success.

Daisy is a little like the stereotypical 'pixie dream girl' at the start of the novel. She's the 1970s groupie with the troubled past and the charismatic charm to carry her through life. Embroiled in famous men who don't treat her right, she finds herself falling into the role of singer to express herself. She wants to be seen as more than a pretty face and a wild party animal. She's ambitious and knows what she wants, with the attitude to match. When coupled with Billy, one of the Dunne brothers who formed The Six, the chemistry is dynamic. Electric. And oh so intriguing to read about. Their struggles, both personally and professionally, and the tension and irrestistable draw between the two are really what made this story so good. It didn't take the typical path I thought it would tread, preferring to let the reader see these characters really suffer with their feelings and the need to do the right thing. Daisy's heartbreak feels so raw and emotional because of this, and I fell deeply into her world.

Aside from Billy and Daisy, we also have a hold host of other characters who feel well developed and complex. From Graham, the Dunne brother constantly in the shadow of Billy and hopelessly in love with keyboard player Karen, to Karen herself. A woman trying to pave her way in a man's world and not conform to what's expected of her. To Camila. Long suffering wife of Billy, hopeless optimistic, loving and forgiving. They're all likeable and well defined and feel so real.

I listened to this audio, and I feel this was a really good decision. The writing style takes the format of a series of interviews with the band, told directly to an unknown journalist. Because of this, the story takes more of the tone of a music documentary and is skillfully written in such a way that I just couldn't put this down. It held my interest from the get go, and at times I really felt I was listening to a real band talk about their history due to this creative take on world building.

Highly recommend, even if historical fiction isn't normally your genre. This feels so unique, and the characters had me utterly swept up in their lives. ...more "
