Let me try.
There’s something so real and natural about this book that I don’t see all that often. And maybe it’s because I don’t read that many books or maybe it’s because I’m in just the right mental state to receive this for what it is, but I am just floored by this. I don’t mean to overhype this, and it wasn’t some earth-shattering book with new revelations. But it touched my heart and did me good to read it.
Himawari House is a strikingly honest look at what it means to be of more than one culture. Of what it means to move to a new country and learn a new language. And it’s from multiple perspectives, too. We follow three young women from three different countries as they try to make a life and home for themselves in Japan. Nao, Hyejung, and Tina are just such compelling protagonists. Oh my word. Each of them had their own story and motives that made them unique and three-dimensional. They didn’t always say the right thing or make the right choices. But they’re human!! And they learn from their mistakes!! I can’t stress enough how refreshing that is to see!! They cry and contradict themselves and get homesick and don’t want to leave the life they’ve made!! I love them!!
Anyway, I am going to buy this book immediately.
