i really really really liked this. rookie mistake that i forgot to leave a review when i finished and i'm now 20% into the second book so this is gonna be all over the place with what i can remember

i did not find the first ~100 pages of this book 4.75

i did not find the first ~100 pages of this book nearly as hard to get into as everyone else claimed. i think reading throne of glass prior to this was incredibly helpful in understanding the more complicated portal/multiple world elements and would highly recommend reading that first. second, i also did not find the modern setting nearly as jarring as i expected to. i grew to completely love the way sjm integrated magic and modern technology. and i LOVE the city, i think its the most incredible setting for this story

overall i loved it. i do kind of feel like this could have been a stand alone book based on the ending so i'm curious to see where the series goes. per usual, spoiled thoughts below!
