Ok so, given that ACOTAR hauled me out of a reading slump last March, I will probably always have a soft spot for it (and any of SJM’s books for that matter). So maybe it wasn’t much of a surprise that the hysteria surrounding ACOSF didn’t actually deter me or make me think “what if it doesn’t live up to the hype?”. I think I just had a hunch I’d love it because helloooo Cassian – the cocky, arrogant (and wee bit tortured) Illyrian general GETS HIS OWN BOOK AND IT DIDN’T DISAPPOINT!

SJM has certainly upped her game in a lot of ways since the original trilogy and maybe now is a good time to say she was NOT messing when she made that jump from YA to NA. This book packs a lot more of a steamy punch and it definitely doesn’t hold back when showing Cassian and Nesta’s very fiery personalities… I won’t beat around the bush, they are both filth and I was here for it. Let’s just say by Chapter 27, you forget all about that (somewhat hyped) Chapter 55 in ACOMAF. 🥵🥵

All smut aside, I really rated how Cassian and Nesta’s relationship developed in this book. I loved their dynamic in the ACOTAR series and having access to their POV’s here was just magnifique. From the dry and crass retorts from Cassian to get under Nesta’s skin to Nesta biting back every time, I was living for it! We also see beneath the surface of how deeply Cassian cares for Nesta, and how he just gets her, showing patience and waiting for her to reach that point where she admits she needs help. God it was just so wholesome, I loved seeing this side of Cassian. 🥺

Another thing I want to point out is NESTA MAKES FRIENDS ALL ON HER OWN! This honestly was so satisfying to read because let’s face it, Nesta is a pro at hiding behind the great wall of steely emotions and she’s never seemed to have had anyone where she’s excelled at pushing everyone away. We get a real sense in this book at how much she felt displaced in both the human and Fae realms, so the fact that she found genuine friendships was one of my highlights. When she puts herself between her friends and the Illryians during the Blood Rite in order for them to reach the summit, it was another moment we had all been waiting for and oh, it was so worth the wait. 🤗🧡

I am a sucker for a bit of poetic/metaphorical writing and I think SJM has done a good job of incorporating the struggles surrounding mental health here. Obviously how it is interpreted can always go one of two ways and everyone deals with their own battles and traumas differently, but I think in Nesta’s case it was written well. I love the significance of the darkness at the bottom of the library being akin to depression and how you choose to face it and handle it is the important part.

What I also noticed (if memory serves me well!) was the meaning behind the descending/ascending of the 10,000 steps. At first I saw it as a kind of mental test of will for Nesta, but then when she finally reaches the bottom of the steps, that coincides with when she hits rock bottom and is at her absolute worst. If I’m not remembering it wrong, it’s when she has that reeeeally heated exchange with Feyre and Amren and let’s just say she aims for the jugular and well, you know the rest…👀

SJM’s pacing of the plot never seemed to slow here and stayed pretty consistent throughout. The information was drip-fed in such a way that you never got an overload of facts to process. There was definitely some foreshadowing which I’m still trying to make sense of (I HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS AND A LONG ASS TIME TO WAIT FOR ANSWERS), but my main question is .. What was Papa Archeron’s bargain with Koschei for Vassa’s help?? Have I totally missed this or are we expecting a massive bomb to drop in the next book…? I feel like no one is asking this question and to me it sounds like it should be a big deal!?🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyway in short, it’s a solid 5/5 and I would go as far to say it is my favourite SJM book. Of course I'm a little bit mad I read it so quickly given the wait we now have for the next book, but I never learn. 🙃

Well played SJM, very well played 👏🏻 ...more "
