“But regardless, Mr. Meinert looked forward to Wednesday night the way a parent looks forward to seeing a child take those first few steps alone — alone, but not really.”

“I'd never thought about what my favorite color was before. It never seemed important.
Not until I looked into a pair of ocean blue eyes and realized that perhaps drowning was a beautiful thing.
Not until I looked into a pair of fiery blue eyes and realized that perhaps burning was a painless thing.
Not until I looked into a pair of sky blue eyes and realized that perhaps falling was a peaceful thing.
I'd never thought about what my favorite color was before because I hadn't seen one that was worthy of the title. Until now, that is.
"Blue," I say, my voice low.”

“Is that a microscope?” I ask, looking at the array of glass slides, tweezers, and eye droppers next to what is definitely a microscope. “Please tell me you’re not playing doctor in the living room.”
“We’re playing scientist, dummy,” Joey says.
“I’m showing him what different stuff looks like under magnification.”
“I looked at a dust mite,” Joey says. “I am not okay.”

“Do you think that Jesus Christ would—would—well, do you think he'd help a poor, unlarnt Flat Cricker like me?"
"I think he was a sort of a Flat Creeker himself," said Ralph, slowly and very earnestly.
"You don't say?" said Bud, almost getting off his seat.
"Why, you see the town he lived in was a rough place. It was called Nazareth, which meant 'Bush-town.'"
"You don't say?"
"And he was called a Nazarene, which was about the same as 'backwoodsman.”
― The Hoosier Schoolmaster: A Story of Backwoods Life in Indiana

“I open my door and crook my head for her to follow. “I understand why you thought you couldn’t tell me you were trying to win the bet, but I hate being moved around like a pawn.”
“Some of the greatest chess matches ever played were won by pawns.” Ruby catches sight of my face and adds, “Not the point. Right.”
