This book IS just sex. It's basically erotica.
When I listened to the prologue, I was surprised that it already started with a sex scene. I thought, "Oh, the author is giving us an appetizer because it's gonna take a long time before the characters get together again...".
But no? I couldn't have been more wrong. Again, this book is just a series of sex scenes one after another. It's the closest thing to a porn-without-plot fanfic I've ever read as a published book.

The characters also are pretty surface level. Because there isn't much development between one spicy scene and the other. It doesn't help that if they're not having sex, they're thinking of it.
At least Ilya was fun and had many great one liners. Shane on the other hand... He was so bland. There's no way to describe him beside cookie-cutter nice guy. However, on that point, more than once I had the feeling he was actually written to be a girl. I don't remember when was the last time I felt this way reading a m/m book.

There are some attempts by the author to broaden the scope of the story, but she never fully explores those elements.
Take Ilya's relationship with his family. It's a lot of telling us and barely showing us. We only got one scene with his father and zero with the step-mother, even though she was apparently a big problem for him.
My favorite part of the book was when Rose entered the picture because it felt like the plot was finally moving forward, and the characters were developing a little. However, it was a very short interlude.

I thought even the framing of telling the story over many years didn't really pay off. The characters don't change and we see so little of their life that you don't even feel the passing of time.

It's an ok romance, very clichéd, but enjoyable if you like erotica.
I was expecting something more. I really don't fully get all the hype around it.
From what I've understood after doing some research, the sequel (The Long Game) is actually where the characters get more developed...? Right now, I think I'll wait to see the tv adaptation and if I like it, I'll give the sequel a chance. ...more "
