This is an excellent example of how high the quality of a book this is because I would say I’m not an avid reader. The main reason I would give this book a 5-star rating is because of the main character, Percy Jackson. Percy Jackson is a half-blood whose mother is a mortal, but whose father is the god of the sea, Poseidon. Because of this, Percy has amazing powers, which he uses throughout this book to defend Olympus. Percy is an excellent example of a character who is relatable to the reader. Percy is just trying to be an everyday kid but is unfortunately given a task where he has to save the world. If the reader doesn’t relate to Percy in any way, they’ll still want to be like Percy. Percy is selfless, brave, tough, and smart. He cares about his friends, which I believe is his best quality. He would be willing to do anything to save any of his friends, which is his best and worst quality. At the end of this book, Percy has to make a decision that will either save or destroy the world. Percy cares so much about helping others. During this book, all the mortals fall asleep, and while others don’t care what happens to them, Percy always has them be his first priority.
In The Last Olympian, I made three connections from How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster. These were that Riordan uses many Christ figures in this book, he uses water to show change, and he uses many symbols throughout the book. An example of a Christ figure is Luke Castellan who sacrifices himself at the end of the book in order to save the world. Through his sacrificing himself, he always redeems himself as Christ redeemed us.
I believe that everyone should read this book because of how good it is and the way it can relate to everyone. I believe this book could be intended for all ages, and it shouldn’t just be limited to high school students. If you like the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter books, I also would recommend this book as well as all the other books in this series. ...more "
