It must be a symbol or motif for bad luck because so far Lewis and Ricky faced risk to their life whenever an elk is mentioned.

Reading this book has made me think about the Native Americans that once colonized the North American continent. I remember learning about them in history classes and I was always fascinated with ancient or tribal civilizations such as the Indians. It made me think about how they adapted to modern eras of our world. I do know that they still celebrate their tradition and culture. However, this novel shows me what they think and experience through the changes of how they live compared to their lives in the past. They were considered as savages at the time and I feel like they never faced such difficulties after that. I feel like we don’t acknowledge the Native Americans like we used to be before. To me it seems like their existence just mixed in with rest of the people where we focus on topics and controversy like police violence and racism.

So far the book likes to put in detail of dogs suffering around one of the main characters, Lewis. So far Harley, Lewis’ dog, was killed by a horse in a gruesome way. It felt horrifying of the grotesque image the author made of the trampled dog. I don’t know if the author had some thing against dogs but it’s sad for how the dogs are treated. I don’t see things get treated horribly in person. I only see these kinds of things in movies or on shows. Before Harley death, there was this one experience where Harley got caught up on some fence as well. I also wanted to add on how the characters in the book are being haunted by some sort of spirit. Like the elk’s spirit is taking revenge on the four Indians for committing a sort of crime in their culture. It’s a taboo for them because they don’t really like to talk about it as well.

In the book I read how Lewis, one of the main protagonists, was killed by a horse. It’s what he thought, however, he was skeptical with how he saw some supernatural creature in the form of a humanoid Elk lady. Which is haunting Lewis because bad things happen to him like his dog dying. Lewis doesn’t believe his dog died from a horse but by the ghost or whatever it is haunting him. The ghost is only haunting Lewis because it wants revenge for the death of her calf. The human Elk continues to haunt the protagonists throughout the story. ...more "
