It did have action sequences, which were exciting, but it was more a story of the people than action. Yes, there were vampires, and yes, they were vicious killers, but they were not the main focus of the book. I got wrapped up in the human story and the vampires were somewhat secondary--they were important only in how they affected the lives of the humans. After reading the book, the overwhelming emotion was sorrow. It was not a happy book, and the surviving humans had very little to be happy about. Survival was really a day-to-day struggle. Yes, there were small moments of happiness, but they were always offset by danger. The author really hit you with his worst, I think, in the last paragraph of the book--that really evinced the sorrow that overwhelmed the whole story. I usually prefer more upbeat books, but this one was so good, I will overlook it in my review....more
