"I totally forgot she killed off a dog in this book 😭 That aside, this is still as gripping & fun as I remember it being. Thankfully, I forgot all the twists and got to enjoy watching them unfold again! The audiobook was also excellent. It featured multimedia sections that were voiced by a full cast & spliced among the normal single-speaker narrative. -1 star for Barney who didn’t deserve his fate 😭" — Oct 21, 2025 05:28PM

“God, Joelle.” Another bitter laugh. “I know they should be put away somewhere safe—I did have them somewhere safe, in a display case. At my bookstore. But I can’t do that anymore because my shop is currently torn to hell with the

“I had done something wrong. I shouldn't have shown him. But he had known, hadn't he? What had I done? I retreated quickly down the aisle, pushing my way through the double doors into the porch, where I swiped one of my eyes dry. For a long moment I stood in the dim room, looking blankly at the flyers for bake sales and Bible studies on the noticeboard.
Then I heard him shout, "Damn you! Why?"
I looked through the clear glass of the porch doors to see if he spoke to some barely seen faerie. But to my eyes, there was no one there but Luke and God.”

“Everyone thought it was hilarious. Look how crazy she is! Even my parents acted embarrassed by me. But nobody seemed to understand that I was simply out of my mind with grief. My children had been taken away from me. With my head shaved, everyone was scared of me, even my mom. No one would talk to me anymore because I was I was too ugly. My long hair was a big part of what people liked – I knew that. I knew a lot of guys thought long hair was hot… shaving my head was a way of saying to the world: Fuck you. You want me to be pretty for you? Fuck you. You want me to be good for you? Fuck you. You want me to be your dream girl? Fuck you.”

“It really confirmed for me that inside everyone lurks a Sherlock Holmes that believes that given the right amount of clues they could solve a mystery. If the challenge here, or perceived weakness, is that the unsolved aspect will leave readers unfulfilled, why not turn that on its head and use it as a strength?”
