For the first part of the book, I was worried that there wouldn't be much real, all together plot. I had been looking forward to seeing all the interactions between the hostages, and at first I thought we wouldn't ge Wow. This is truly a special book.

For the first part of the book, I was worried that there wouldn't be much real, all together plot. I had been looking forward to seeing all the interactions between the hostages, and at first I thought we wouldn't get that. To be honest, in the initial police interviews, I thought that pretty much all the characters were annoying and super difficult. This was true, all of them were difficult, and annoying in their own way, but by the end of the book ALL of them had endeared themselves to me.

Backman's writing is beautiful, thought provoking, and quirky. He is able to create truly unique characters who, at the same time, reflect our own insecurities and give voices to our struggles. This book, filled with "anxious people" makes the readers feel less alone in their own anxieties. It is a simple, quiet book that tells more about everyday life than anything else I've ever read.

Once we got into the main part of the story, I could not put this book down. I can't pinpoint a moment when it happened for each of the characters but they all slowly went from being insufferable (Zara) or just annoying (Roger) to being people I rooted for, people that I liked and wanted the best for. I loved how they all slowly thawed to each other as well, becoming an unlikely family.

This book explores layers and layers of themes, all around the human experience and the universal fears and worries we have about love, life, and death. It is beautiful, heart-wrenching, thoughtful, suspenseful, and just purely lovely.

I read Beartown a few months ago, and it quickly became one of my favorite books of all time. This book has all the charm of Beartown without the intensity. I loved the high-stakes nature of Beartown, but it was nice to have a little book that was just a wonderful display of normal life (if you can consider a hostage drama normal). Even so, this book was more suspenseful than I was expecting, and I still had no idea how it would all play out until it was revealed. It was also so cool seeing how all the characters intersected with each other in ways we wouldn't expect (Zara being the banker at the beginning, Nadia being the girl on the bridge, etc).

I don't write many reviews, and rarely any that are this long. That's a sign of how incredible this book is, I have so much to say about it. I definitely won't stop thinking of this book for a long time, and it has immediately become one of the best books I've ever read. ...more "
