The same plot, the same atmosphere, just with different characters who you really know the bare minimum about. However, when it comes to Stephen King’s IT, character personality is quite literally everything. You will learn so much about each character, who each has their own giant section of the book dedicated to their backstory and who they are as a person, and how this experience has changed them, even if they can’t remember it.

Richie Tozier is a 13 year old boy from Derry, Maine. He’s closeted with a plan to never come out in fear he’d lose his lover (who unknowingly shares the same feelings) and best friends. His character is best known for his comedy and dirty mouth, which earns him the nickname ‘Trashmouth Tozier’. One of the most important things that Richie goes through is trying to figure himself out. When he’s 13, he thinks his feelings for his best friend are normal, he thinks that he just really likes him. But, when he decided to flirt with a different boy inside of his favorite arcade, that’s when it hits him who he really is. Derry is cursed, so when you leave you completely forget everything you’ve known before, but when Richie comes back as an adult, the first thing he remembers is Eddie Kaspbrak, and how bad this trip is going to be. When he finally comes to terms with who he is, it’s the scariest thing ever because it all hits him at once, when he realizes why Pennywise was scaring him in the ways that he did. He never actually came out, but he was very represented in the story.

Very well into the book, the theme starts to show itself. The theme is never be afraid of yourself and what you can do. This theme is very heavily enforced as Pennywise eats your fears like candy. He takes on the shape of your greatest fears, and the only way to defeat him is to not be scared anymore, and to scare him instead.Stephen King’s IT is perfect if you can handle good scares and keep track of storyline and backgrounds easily. ...more "
