There are a handful of romance books that I think about with any sense of regularity (at least, in a positive light). All of them are queer, and half of them follow sports in some capacity, and all of them are about so much more than their initial premise. This most definitely joins the ranks.

Eddie O'Leary's identity is perhaps the closest I've come to seeing my experience reflected on page. Is it a little horrifying that it entails seeing myself in a queer baseball player from the 60s that never actually existed and has a much happier home life then I ever have? Yes, a little, but I think it says a lot about how grounded this story feels.

You could look at me and tell me that the entire premise of their romance is unrealistic, and I would agree with you. But even when highlighting that most baseball players would not be okay with Eddie's queerness, or that a real-life Eddie would never so easily want to take risks for a relationship like the one he has with Mark, it still feels like these are things that could have happened, somewhere hidden from the limelight.

In the end, this book is about community, about Eddie finding his place on the team and Mark finding himself and fostering good relationships. It's about second chances, Eddie's slump, and Mark falling in love again (and everything else Mark mentions in his article... you get my point). These are all things that make me feel a little ill, a little sick to my stomach. They are aspects of life that I strive for, and reading it in the shape of these two flawed people made me feel so many things.

There isn't a magical coming out ending. That's always something that scares me about queer books—especially those set in the past. Coming out isn't everything, and it doesn't change much. Well, it would to a professional athlete, and that's kind of the point of not including it. No coming out makes this story fit into the real world, makes it feel like maybe there was a queer baseball player and this could have been his story. And there's something comforting about imagining that in some parallel universe, Eddie and Mark are happy living their quiet, queer life, surrounded by friends and family who knows.

It's not the way the world worked then, but this is a book, and I think it's the perfect ending for them. ...more "
