The book is mainly about the struggle of a boy from Texas who started off rough but found his redemption in joining the Navy SEALS. Chris learns from a first person view that the initiation and training to become a SEAL is the toughest thing that he has ever done. He faces the most intense physical and mental training of his life and he must overcome being mentally broken. The whole story is based around Chris’s experiences during his service in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Navy SEAL sniper. All of the crazy things that he sees and what it means to be part of a brotherhood.

I personally thought that this book was a fantastic read and couldn't have been any more inspiring to me. I also wish to pursue a military career soon after high school and college. The book was a five star keep you reading kind of book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys realism and personal accounts from first person experience. The description of the feelings and emotions that Chris was feeling during his training and out in the field in combat situations made me feel as if I was there watching the whole thing from start to finish. The theme of the book is quite simple and it is that if you have the right mindset and determination, anything is possible.

During training Chris, being raised in Texas, had a bit of a liking for chewing tobacco and got caught with it during BUD/S or the training that SEALs must go through. So when a drill sergeant caught him he forced him to do push ups with the can of chewing tobacco in front of Chris. “Every time I came down from a push-up, I had to take a big bite of Copenhagen and swallow it. I had been dipping from the time I was fifteen, and I already regularly swallowed my tobacco when I was done so it wasn’t as bad as you might think.” Another one which is right at the end of the book really spoke to me on what Chris was really about. “When God confronts me with my sins, i do not believe any of the kills I had during the war will be among them. Everyone i shot was evil, I had a good cause on every shot. They all deserved to die.” ...more "
