So with dreams of being “The Great Receiver”, he settled with being the water boy/team manager. One day, when the wide receiver was suspended from school, Joey was given another chance. After seeing Joey make a spectacular catch, the football coach, Coach Miller gave Joey another tryout and he made the team. With his new position on the team, and the success the team was having with him on the team, Joey’s friendships and grades were slipping, while the quarterback was angry with him for taking the spot. Trying to juggle all aspects of his life, Joey grows up a lot and learns how to manage his priorities. In the end, Joey ends up with a winning personality, both on and off the team.
This book was a good read because it was easy to understand, and the author appealed to the reader by writing about a high school student, which is the age group for which this book was written. He used common dreams and problems that a high school student could have, which really helps the reader connect to the character. For example, Joey daydreams while working in his dads shop, picturing this in his head, “The crowd goes nuts. The cheerleaders rush at me, calling my name. Coach Miller hollers my name, too. In fact, everyone in the whole stadium is chanting. 'Jo-ey! Jo-ey! Jo-ey!'” (6). This was a good way connect the reader to the character, because almost all male high school students have dreamed of winning that state championship, whether it be football or something else. Eulo wrote in an easy style that was easy to relate to.
The theme of the book is Joey growing as a person throughout the story. There are a lot of examples of this in the book. One example is his relationship with his best friend, Samantha. Sam always liked Joey, but he only ever considered as a friend and had a crush on Ashley, a cheerleader, instead. As his football career grows and he sees that there isn't really a popular group, he starts to realize that Ashley isn't really all that great, and maybe Sam is the girl for him. Another example of how he grows as a person in when he defends his biology partner, Perry, from being beat up by the football quarterback and his friends. Joey got a group of other players together to go and defend Perry, facing Cam (the quarterback), saying “Just know that to get to him, you're going to have to go through me!” (232). Joey stood up for Perry and defended him, even though he wanted to beat up Perry once too. Seeing that Joey grew from someone who couldn't even stand up for himself, to someone who could stand up for other people, shows that he grew as a person. ...more "
