I honestly hadn’t picked up a John Green book since I was in high school and now I am currently a senior in college, months away from graduating, which feels weird. It also feels weird to think about how John Green has followed me throughout various points of my life, both in his novels and also in the numerous CrashCourse videos I relied on to pass a variety of classes.

I didn’t really know what to expect from “The Anthropocene Reviewed” but there was something nostalgic to me about picking up a John Green book in 2021, and I’m glad I did. My parents bought a copy of this book from Costco and my brother and I passed it back and forth trying to read it at the same time but as we split up for the school year, I let him take it with him to college while I splurged on audiobook instead. I’ve been listening to it every day on my walk to campus, a few chapters here and there but I finally finished today and I didn’t realize how much I needed this book.

In the simplest of terms, John Green’s “The Anthropocene Reviewed,” specifically in audiobook format, felt like having a conversation with an old friend that you haven’t seen in a while. This book was funny and sad but also extremely honest. I found myself constantly going from laughter to teary eyes while listening to this book and in many ways, it felt like a security blanket. There is a simple joy in finding comfort in what is familiar and listening to this book gave me that feeling of comfort, taking me back to days that were less complicated in a world that felt kinder. Especially after this last year and a half we’ve had, it was a great reminder that we are not alone in our thoughts, struggles, and experiences. That there are so many wonderful things to love and appreciate in addition to the things we strongly dislike. I can honestly say that I am surprised that even after all these years John Green still has the ability to make me cry.
