For years I feel like I couldn’t put into words what it means to me. Now I feel as though I can. It’s funny. When I first finished this book, I was rather surprised to see so much criticism. But after thinking on it for a while, it makes sense. This story is filled with truth. It’s complex and nuanced truth that you won’t be able to connect with unless you too have experienced such. Not just experienced, but also learned to live with. It holds up a mirror to the worst parts of yourself and those you know. It holds up a mirror to trauma and what it does to us. It forces you to see the bad and the ugly and still asks you to stay. This is a story that not everyone may like, but it’s one that everyone should read. If only to learn that that you can spiral and descend into a darkness so deep that it threatens to swallow you, and still choose to save yourself. If only to learn that you are strong and capable beyond measure and belief. If only to learn to accept help, and that connections and friendships strengthen you. The friendship theme is huge to me. The depiction of Nesta finding her friends meant a lot. Not only the female friendships, but Cassian too. I love that he is her friend before anything else. Nesta learns to battle her demons through connection and that is important. You should read this book if only to learn that the things that haunt and hurt you don’t have to define you and that you must learn to live with them. Through doing this, you alchemize pain into strength and it also makes the good times shine even brighter. Lastly, the acotar series is known for its love stories, but the one love story no one ever talks about is the one between three sisters. The love of a sister is messy and complex, but it is grounded in eternal love. It is grounded in the simple fact that you’d do anything to save your sister. I could talk about this story forever. I could go on and on about the Valkyries, and the training, and the house of wind, and the bog of oorid. But I’ll just say that I feel so lucky to have found this book.
