I spent a lot of my free time thinking about vis and his journey through this book, and I think even though I’ve finished it, I’ll still probably think about it for a long time. in my opinion, this was an extremely intelligent book that takes it time with its characters and story development but never feels like it’s dragging. for a 600+ page book, this shit is exciting (or at least it was to me) from beginning to end. I was immediately transported to this Ancient Rome-esque world and was entranced by the societal and magic system that the author crafted so well. while there was still the typical fantasy learning curve at the start, the story was still engaging enough to encourage me to keep going and honestly was so worth it in the end (that was truly one of one most insane endings I think I’ve ever read). the author is so careful with his world building and story progression that I never felt bored with the informative parts or unable to visualize the world during the exciting parts. it’s a LONG book but when I tell you it is so evenly paced and SO interesting that I wished the book would last longer just so that I would have more of the story to read. the last thing I’ll say so yall can stop reading my literal heart gushing for this book is that i don’t typically like when societal / political commentary finds its way into my leisure reading because truly I read to have a silly little fun time! BUT this was done so carefully and so well in my opinion. It provided a lot of introspection for me on how I feel about certain moral or governmental ideals and I appreciated that it balanced that while also still being a badass fantasy book. infinity stars for the will of the many! now it’s time to reread it so I can figure out what THE FUCK that ending was about. ...more "
