As a more recent addition to the literary library, students of all ages can enjoy the relateable characters, unique setting, and engaging plot. Shusterman wrote this book intending to pose thought-provoking questions and make the reader think critically, even if it doesn’t appear that way at its surface. In essence, Scythe is easy to read but difficult to understand. This is the first of its many positives. Scythe perfectly disguises itself as a middle school book through basic writing but mixes in complex vocabulary and advanced themes like death and corruption. Virtually every chapter, character, and description holds meaning to the reader, who can interpret each aspect of the writing in their way. Ultimately, Shusterman brought his world to life concisely and vividly; for example, society’s hierarchy and role are clear but are interpreted very differently based on the reader’s perspective of the government and world. With solid groundwork for his story, Shusterman simply had to create interesting characters and a unique plot to tie everything together, which he did well. All in all, Scythe is a really well-rounded book with intriguing concepts, good pacing, and no uninteresting moments Perhaps my only true gripe with the book would have to be the distracting grammatical and formatting errors. This issue may be somewhat of a reach, but on occasion, these instances can really take away from the beauty of the story itself. An extremely minor issue, but annoying nonetheless. Overall, this simple yet complex book makes for an excellent and entertaining read for any age. I would recommend this book to anyone. Looking forward to reading Shusterman’s next installment, Thunderhead!...more
