I like this book more every time I read it, but I still can’t bring myself to give it more than 3.5 stars without knowing how the series ends. I’m really hoping to bump this to 4 stars after Greywaren is out.

**Original Review**

This is a 3.5 rating that might become a 4 depending on where Mister Impossible takes us.

I really enjoyed Call Down the Hawk. Like all of Stiefvater’s later novels, CDTH is a character-driven book with a healthy dose of plot on the side. I disagree with Stiefvater that it’s not necessary to have read TRC to understand CDTH—it’s *essential* that the reader has read the first series before embarking on this one. Otherwise, Ronan would be an underdeveloped character in this installation, and Declan’s and Matthew’s growth wouldn’t mean nearly as much. That’s not a criticism, per se, so much as a note to future readers that this book is wholly part of TRC world.

But even though this novel is fully-embedded in TRC mythology, it also expands it to more fully explore the concept of Dreamers in the larger World. The dreamers here—Ronan and Hennessy—are expertly crafted and wonderful to watch (even if we only get to really know Hennessy toward the end of the book). It’s fun to watch Ronan come into his own and begin to care about other people outside his core groups of friends.

Declan and Jordan are the stars here, though. I loved their relationship and felt the weight of everything between them. Both of them want more and are more than their lives are letting them become. It’s a fascinating dynamic, and I can’t wait to see where it goes in the rest of the series.

I also enjoyed the Farooq-Lane storyline, but this has been the weakest part of the story so far, which is unfortunate because this is the central conflict in the series, it seems. I hope that pairing Farooq-Lane with Lilliana will lend more weight and consequence to their plot line moving forward.

Overall this is a solid first entry in what I hope to be a series that is every bit as good as TRC. ...more "
