The jokes in this book are from twelve year olds so they might not be too funny to some people.
This book is about a twelve year old that has only a mom and has a unique “ability”. The ability he has is that he can tell what offensive play the opposing team is going to run by looking at who is put in and out of the game, and remember what plays the team used before by also looking at the formation. He also is friends with a football players from the Atlanta Falcons NFL team whose name is Seth. Troy’s mom works for the Atlanta Falcons and the coaches found out his ability and used it in games. After one game Troy did an interview with a reporter named Peele that writes for the newspaper. Peele twisted what Troy told him to make it look like he was cheating and made Seth and his mom’s job harder and put it in danger.
The book got me confused at the beginning because Troy also plays on his only little league team and has two friends named Tate who is a girl and Nathan. The reason it had me confused is because I wasn’t sure if Nathan was an Atlanta Falcon player or if he was on the team with Troy. Once I read more and more I started remembering what team he plays for, along with other people in the book.
This book reminds me of a book I read when I was in 6th grade called Two-Minute Drill by Mike Lupica. It is similar because it was also a high rated book that had to do with football. It showed football at the same age but had a different conflict than Football Champ did.
One thing that I liked about Football Champ is that it has good words in it. At first when I was reading it I thought that it didn’t have much showing but just telling. But I realized that it has good writing. There were a lot of similes that really made the picture in my mind come alive. My favorite one is, “His mom popped the car into reverse, and the motor whined as they flew backward down the dirt track, leaving a cloud of glimmering dust in their wake” (pg 216). Instead of just saying “they backed out of their driveway” he showed how fast they backed out and the dust it left behind. Another simile that I liked is, "’One to two million?’ Troy said, exhaling the words like a puff of breath on a cold day” (pg. 274). He shows how he said “one to two million?” and that he was surprised when he heard him say that. I was wrong when I thought that this book didn’t have good writing or words.
I rated this book 4 out of 5. The reason I think its 4 is because it had a great story that shows football from two different ages and great wording. It’s also really quick to read and there is about a chapter every two to four pages. I didn’t give it 5 is because the ending could be predictable but was unexpected at the time it happened. I love the end of books and like the surprise but I predicted that this might happen at the end. Overall this is a great book that you will like if you want something that’s not going to be difficult for you to read and if you like football. ...more "
