TWO THINGS I ENJOY OR APPRECIATE
- I enjoy the intensity of the book. During each chapter, there is at least one event that occurs that leaves me with suspense, wondering about Outside Reading Midpoint Review for Themes Across Literature & Film Course

TWO THINGS I ENJOY OR APPRECIATE
- I enjoy the intensity of the book. During each chapter, there is at least one event that occurs that leaves me with suspense, wondering about what will happen next. These events propel me to read more and keep me predicting about the later conflicts in the book. As of now, I have no idea where this book is going. Anything can happen from here.
- Roth does a great job of explaining the layout of the city as well as the characters. She creates pictures in my mind of what the characters look like and how they act, and the layout of the city; 5 factions called Abnegation, Erudite, Candor, Dauntless, and Amity. Each faction makes up the city and they all think one virtue is the best. For example Dauntless values bravery while Amity values friendship.
ONE THING ABOUT WHICH I AM CRITICAL
- I have not had a lot of time to read this book. When I have time in English class I read, and at home, I occasionally get the chance to, but because I take lengthy breaks in between where I stopped reading and where I started, I sometimes forget some of the minor plot conflicts that occur. However, once I get into the book again, they come back into my memory.
ONE LITERARY ASPECT
- Beatrice is immediately likeable. Because she is a divergent human, she has the characteristics and virtues of multiple factions. She is brave, honest, knowledge, and values pro-self sacrifice. By Roth giving her all of these characteristics the reader loves listening to her scenarios for the aptitude test. When Roth describes the setting of the Dauntless faction, she uses such descripitve detail. The reader loves reading about how Beatrice changes from Abnegation to Dauntless and how she uses all of her characteristics. On another note, Beatrice is portrayed as pretty and gets along with Four and Eric, the two guys in Dauntless.
ONE DRAMATIC ASPECT
- Roth does a great job of describing the process of Beatrice switching to the Dauntless faction. She explains how the Dauntless faction values Bravery and in order to be initiated, one has to complete tasks which require them to be brave. During these tasks, Roth uses suspence and drama to make the reader want to continue reading. The book becomes more exciting and fun to read. Because Dauntless welcomes Beatrice with open arms, the reader wants to be with Beatrice and explore the Dauntless caverns and world with her.
ONE CINEMATIC ASPECT
- When Beatrice is in the room, taking the aptitude test, which helps decide what faction will best fit her, I can picture the scenarios that are being put in her mind. For the first scenario I picture her in a lunchroom with a dog on one end and two plates on the table near her, a plate with a knife, and a plate with cheese. She has to either kill the dog, or tame it. I can see an actress such as Jennifer Lawrence playing Beatrice. The movie is coming out in about a week and Shailene Woodley will be playing Beatrice.
MY PREDICTION FOR THE ENDING
- I think Four and Tris will lead a revolution to try and remove the corruptness of their city. I don't know what they will fight or how they will do it, but they will lead some sort of revolution. ...more "
