mia ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡ said: " feb 2022: when i first read normal people (2020), i thought it was the most romantic book i’d ever read. i loved the detail rooney put into the communication into marianne and connell and the way they seemed to understand and fit into each other’s li feb 2022: when i first read normal people (2020), i thought it was the most romantic book i’d ever read. i loved the detail rooney put into the communication into marianne and connell and the way they seemed to understand and fit into each other’s lives. i was in my first real relationship at the time, and it seemed like the small things in the novel echoed my reality. on my second read, i’ve begun to notice the flaws in the relationship. marianne and connell have poor communication, and while on the first read i didn't feel the distance or separation between them marked by the time skips, i noticed them more intensely this time. it was easier for me to see how they were growing and changing, and how they became clumsy fitting into each other, as opposed to in my first read where i viewed them as unchanging characters perfect for each other with switching circumstances. i remember thinking how romantic it was, and feeling frustration at their lack of communication, but now on my second read, it feels more depressing, but also less like they’re made for each other. maybe this is pessimism on my part after breakups and a bit more experience and maturity, but i believe i’ve let go of the notion of people being perfect for each other and leaned into effort and romance and in this case, their relationship seems less healthy and perfect. regardless, the novel felt very realistic - it captured small nuances and character traits well, with in-depth characterization with real flaws that still make the characters likeable. i think that normal people finds its greatness in (who would’ve guessed?) normality and relatability. it’s an accurate portrayal of love in the real world and the forms it takes, so unlike our hyper-romanticised ideas of love and connection perpetuated by media. it certainly doesn’t sugarcoat things, and we’re able to understand the dynamic between the two, reasons why they don’t work and why they sometimes do, without demonising one or the other. it’s a book about love, but not just romantic - also about friendship and maturing and the factors that influence our relationships. 4/5 stars! ...more "
