This book is… exceptional. Like, knock-the-wind-out-of-you, stay-up-till-3am, scream-into-your-pillow exceptional.

First off, Violet as an FMC was everything. Finally, a heroine who feels so real. GOD TIER⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (6/5 stars because 5 isn’t enough)

This book is… exceptional. Like, knock-the-wind-out-of-you, stay-up-till-3am, scream-into-your-pillow exceptional.

First off, Violet as an FMC was everything. Finally, a heroine who feels so real. She’s witty, bookish, a little fragile but tougher than people give her credit for, and I related to her so much as a fellow book girlie. Watching her growth through Basgiath was inspiring, I felt like I was walking every terrifying step with her.

And then… Xaden Riorson. Excuse me while I go mentally marry this man. Broody, powerful, impossibly hot, and yet so layered and protective—I am gone, ruined, never coming back. The tension and the yearning between him and Violet? Absolutely delicious. Their banter was sharp and witty, and when they finally kissed? That scene genuinely rewired my brain chemistry. I am not the same person I was before.

The dragons deserve their own section. The sarcastic commentary from Tairn had me cackling, and Andarna was pure chaos and sweetness rolled into one. Their dynamic with Violet wasn’t just fun, it made the bond between rider and dragon feel so alive and magical.

But what really held the book together for me beyond the romance was the friendship and found family aspect. Watching Violet form connections, find people who truly believed in her, and fight side by side with them added so much emotional depth.

Structurally, the epigraphs at the start of each chapter were genius. They gave just enough hints of the bigger world while keeping the story tight and fast-paced. The book never dragged, it felt like it was pulling me through page after page with no escape (not that I wanted one).

And then… the ending. My jaw was literally on the floor. Rebecca Yarros did that. I stared at the page, reread it, and screamed internally. The audacity. The heartbreak. The sheer brilliance.

This book brought me out of a 3-year reading slump and reminded me why I love fantasy so much. The yearning, the banter, the dragons, it was everything I wanted and more.
