Really enjoying Mrs. March but feel like people are going into reading this with the wrong idea. This is not an action packed mystery full of plot twists and surprises, which I think a lot of people thought going into it and therefore hadn't it.

It's a character study of a woman, Mrs. March, who believes herself to be poised and elegant and envied by others, only to have a mental breakdown when she releases that no one views her like that at all. It's told entirely from her perspective and in her head from the view point that she believes certain things about the world and assumes everyone agrees with her only to discover that she's on her own and no one thinks like this.

It is very in the style of Rebecca and Jane Eyre, exploring Mrs March's inner thoughts rather than the different events and plot points happening and building to a climax. (There is no great serial killer she is trying to track down.) She is only known as Mrs March, much like the protagonist in Rebecca.

Ambiguity and symbolism run all the way through the book, (which if you don't like this type of thing might mean you heavily dislike it). Mrs. March begins to doubt her reality and is torn between did that really happen or am I going crazy?

To add to the tone of ambiguity there is not concrete setting for the book. The general tone is 1950/60s but with deliberate anachronisms, paintings in the gallery that weren't patterned until 70s, her son playing with a Rubik cube from the 80s. Did that really happen or is she going crazy?

Mrs March herself is not a 'loveable' character in that way, she assumes things about the world and it is written to assume the reader will agree with her, (like her dislike for her stepdaughter), but because of course we don't. She's lived her whole life doing things to impress others and to gain approval of people around her, but she fails. The reader and the other characters are not impressed by her, and the story is her coming to this understanding. ...more "
