original review (12/21): i have never felt so sorry for myself for not being one of the main characters, and mostly for that reason, im giving this a 4/5

initial impression is that it was really good, relatively enjoyable, and so normal. idk how to describe that, but there wasn’t some weird fantastical cheesy plot like some other romance books. i would say it’s “realistic,” but that feels like the wrong word and i think normal fits better.

probably my favorite thing about the book is the way you get to know the characters. i think a defining feature of this book is how the mcs share such small and incredibly specific moments. i can’t really look back on this and cling to one event and say that was what made the book so good, because it was more of a culmination of things. on a macro level it’s only pretty good, but when you think about the smaller things, it’s very heartwarming and a real sort of romantic. i sound soppy, i know, but the friends to lovers trope will always be the way i wish my life went.

probably my least favorite thing, tho, is that this will never be me. lol. especially hurts that they met at uchicago— it was TOO relatable if that makes sense, which is in no way a fault of the book as much as it is me projecting. also (personal opinion here but) how could they really be so close and both love each other so much non-platonically and only realize/act on it at 28 years old? this may or may not also be me projecting my experiences, but when you love your best friend that way, it would be so crippling to let it stew for 12 years, just sayin. i get the whole you don’t want to lose them thing, but clearly, they still lost each other bc of it. silly mcs.

overall, i like this as a comfort read. it’s a safe book so to speak, especially for recommending it to someone (because how could anyone NOT like it). but then at the same time it wasn’t the kind of book i have to throw my whole being into. i was invested a healthy level, i suppose, but i do like books that you literally can’t put down until it’s over or else you might spontaneously combust from curiosity. this one creeps up on you at a very slow pace, tho perhaps that’s just bc im not good at the whole slow burn friends to lovers thing just yet, and ofc perhaps im so jaded by my own experiences to believe in it LOL. sorry that’s enough of that. great read, highly recommend. would say it 85% lives up to the insane booktok hype, which is a definite good thing. ...more "
