I loved Chaol from the moment I met him in ToG. I will always love the brooding male characters who are secret softies. There's just something about them that are irresistible. Chaol's character development in this is NEXT LEVEL. Honestly, his character development is up there with Nesta's from ACOSF (another character I loved from the very beginning). The way that SJM wrote his character and the struggles she gave him just make sense. He goes from being the strong and brave Captain of the Guard to this very strange and difficult position. His entire life gets flipped on its head, so no wonder he struggles with it. He gets mad at himself and at those closest to him. He lashes out on those he loves even when he doesn't want to. He is hurting. And watching him overcome those hurts and fears and struggles was beautiful and tragic and I already want to reread this book.

Yrene Towers. WOW WOW WOW. What a woman, what a character. The perfect character to bring into the plot. I am so freaking excited for what is next for her. I am obsessed with her and her chapters. I loved her p.o.v. just as much as Chaol's. They balanced each other out so well in this book and their relationship is one of my favorites. I loved every way that it played out.

Nesryn's chapters weren't actually that interesting to me until the very end. But I think the only reason I was actually interested was because of Sartaq and the creatures that are introduced. Her character doesn't seem all that deep to me, but I think that is because she was a much more developed character when she was introduced. She has her flaws, but she is self-confident and we don't see much of her internal battles. Her character helps to push the plot, which I liked a lot but I just don't find her that interesting.

This book also ended on a cliffhanger, but not quite as wild as EoS. Although the very last chapter/epilogue was so intense. So good. I honestly don't even have the right words for how much I love this series.

I tandem read this with Empire of Storms and I cannot recommend it enough. The books compliment each other so well and I feel like they really are just made to be read together. I followed a reading guide that I found online, and I read both books on my kindle so it was super easy to go back and forth between the two. I will say that you do need to read The Assassin's Blade before this book and EoS. There are some very key things that happed in TAB that play into EoS and ToD.

When I reread this series, because I will reread it, I am definitely going to tab and annotate the crap out it. I love love love it.

Now I am off to continue reading Kingdom of Ash. Send good vibes. I can already feel SJM trying to break my heart. ...more "

You never know what to expect and I found myself just as shocked as the characters in the book whenever her masterplans would finally be revealed. Especially at the very end of this book... That cliffhanger was on another level.

Everything about this book was perfect. I loved the introduction of new characters, being able to see old characters come back, and getting chapters from characters that I was really interested by - like Elide and Lorcan. I would highly, highly recommend reading The Assassin's Blade prior to this one. I know it is the prequel, so it should technically be read before this book if you're reading this is timeline order, but I also know that there is debate over where The Assassin's Blade should be read. I cannot recommend this reading order enough:
1. Throne of Glass
2. Crown of Midnight
3. Heir of Fire
4. The Assassin's Blade
5. Queen of Shadows
6. Empire of Storms & Tower of Dawn (in tandem! don't read them in pub order, read them together! I 12/10 promise it is worth it)
7. Kingdom of Ash
I was recommended this reading order and it is perfect. I know that there are other opinions and I totally understand them! But I feel like The Assassin's Blade was super key in understanding parts of this book so my advice would be to read it prior to this one.

As for the amazing characters... The absolute powerhouse that SJM created. OMG. Aelin, Rowan, Dorian, Aedion, Lysandra, Manon, Abraxos, the Thirteen, and all the others that I shall not name for the sake of spoilers. But iykyk. There wasn't a single character I didn't like, which is rare for me. I loved all of them, even the villains. They are so well-rounded and so well thought out. And how each of the characters helps to push the plot is amazing. Speaking of the plot, WOW! This story has everything you want in it, but nothing is too much. There are sneaky plans, puzzle pieces that make no sense until they're finally put in their place, characters that come out of nowhere but that are so good for their role it's insane. The main character, Aelin, is in her own ballgame when it comes to being an absolute mastermind. I'd love to see her and Rhysand from ACOTAR go head to head in some kind of difficult mind challenge. I feel like they are the ultimate planners and thinkers of all the SJM worlds, so it would be interesting to see who would win in this situation.

I am obsessed to say the least. I loved it all. I am already reading KoA because that ending KILLED me, and I couldn't just leave things there. Can't wait to see how this series all comes to an end. Send help lol if I know anything about my girl Sarah...it's that she will break my heart at the end of this series and I am not ready AT ALL. ...more "
