I'm really enjoying it, as I knew I would after reading the introduction in which Baudelaire describes Paris as "a center radiating stupidity in every direction". I've been to Paris, and although it did smell like urine, this isn't how I would be inclined to describe it, but then again, I didn't live there during the 19th century, when flowers probably smelled like urine. For some reason I appreciate a certain amount of cynicism about humanity and Baudelaire certainly seems to have it. As for the collection itself, I've enjoyed the translations, which come from many different sources including Edna St. vincent Millay, Richard Wilbur and Aldous Huxley. You get a sense that some are better at translating that others, which kind of makes me want to learn french. Unfortunately there is no time....more
