This was such a strong YA fantasy read, with great flawed characters, an engaging plot throughout and really immersive writing.

One of the things I found interesting about this book was the format in which the story was told. Along with following Vanja in the present time there are a series of tales sprinkled throughout the book that give more information about Vanja and Gisele’s past, explaining why they had gotten to this point which I loved.

This book is full of so many details and points that it is important to pick up on, along with taking place at different paces throughout the book, starting out slower and speeding up as things went on. This worked really well for the story but also meant that it felt important while reading to take my time which is what I did up until I got to around the page 250 mark and I definitely benefitted from it while reading.

Almost all of the characters in this story are full of depth that you want to keep reading and learning about. Vanja is definitely a morally grey character throughout the full book and this is discussed during the book in a way that I couldn’t help but underline while reading. She is a character who always does what’s best for herself but not because she doesn’t care about others, instead because she doesn’t care about others instead because throughout her life she has had no other options to survive life. In addition to this we had Emeric as a character who was almost the opposite of Vanja, and has also been through a lot in life. I really enjoyed reading about many of the other characters too and hope to read about them again and potentially more in the sequels.

I loved the setting too, it felt like a place that I could easily visit and explore. I got a real understanding for the part of the world we were in and exploring more of this world with Margaret Owen’s writing is something else about the sequels that excites me.

This was a book that I couldn’t rate anything more than 5 stars because of how much I loved it and couldn’t stop reading. I would definitely recommend this book if you haven’t already read it because I completely understand all the positive reviews now. I also look forward to reading more from Margaret Owen in the future because I have loved her writing style. ...more "
