"Mr. Rochester is nothing like Mr. Darcy and I’m having trouble imagining how I’ll ever want Jane to be with him. He’s not terrible, but he’s definitely NOT tall, dark and handsome as many readers describe him to be. In fact, Jane says extensively that he’s short and ugly, and I find him somewhat boring, although he is the least boring thing happening right now. Idk if I should go on or DNF this one" Jan 06, 2025 08:00AM

“Because he was always the sort of person who stood in the way, the sort who protected, the sort who ran. He always thought he was the bad guy in all stories, the real heroes always do, that’s why stories about boys like him never end with them growing old.”

“The most unbearable thing about death is that the world just goes on. Time doesn't care. The morning after the storm, the sun goes up as if it's mocking us, over a wrecked forest and a battered town.”

“There’s a folding chair by the water and there
I think you sit and laugh and feel a love so rare.
There’s ice around your island, you’ve got your skates,
There goes a boy whose beauty never fades.
You’re playing a game, don’t even feel cold,
There plays a boy who’ll never grow old.
You’re everything you wanted to be
You’re safe and happy, wild and free.”

“Mr Churchill caught the end of one of the long ribbons from her bonnet, which were flying madly in the strong breeze. He toyed with it for a long while, then looked up into her eyes. “Do you believe in love at first sight?” he asked.
“No, I don’t suppose I do,” Jane answered. Her heart started beating harder. That was a lie. Maybe her breath was catching in her throat because she was lying: she fell in love with him the moment she saw him, rescuing the poor store clerk. Or maybe it was because he was standing so close to her, just on the other end of her bonnet ribbon. She felt her cheeks growing warm, and tried to talk herself out of blushing. He was not standing any closer to her than when they danced together, or sat on the same bench at the pianoforte. Why should it fluster her that he was wrapping the end of her bonnet ribbon around his fingers like that?”

Fredrik Backman
“When you're young you believe that love is infatuation, but infatuation is simple, any child can become infatuated, fall in love. But real love? Love is a job for an adult. Love demands a whole person, all the best of you, all the worst. It has nothing to do with romance, because the hard part of a marriage isn't that I have to live seeing all your faults, but that you have to live with me seeing them. That I know everything about you now. Most people aren't brave enough to live without secrets. Everyone dreams about being invisible sometimes, no one dreams of being transparent.

Marriage? There ought to be a different word for it after a while. Because there's no such thing as 'eternal infatuation,' only love lasts that long, and it's never simple. It requires a whole person, everything you have. The whole lot.”
