For my book project, I read the book Brighton Beach Memoirs. This book, in my eyes, was very well written. It takes place in 1937 Brooklyn, in the heart of the Great Depression. Eugene, the main character, lives with his Jewish family in a small house in Brighton Beach. Eugene’s calling is writing. He writes about his family, which is a rather chaotic and large one, with his father Jack, his mother Kate, his big brother Stan, his cousins Nora and Laurie, and his Aunt Blanche. We follow his life, the life of a 15 year-old Jewish boy who experiences love (for his cousin... gross), fights within his family, laughter, and puberty. He loves baseball, and his big brother Stan, who he looks up to in every way, not to mention he is obsessed with the thought of sex. This book was written by Neil Simon, and was originally a play. For those who have never read a play book, it is not much different as a regular book except for the way the dialog is written. Actually, it is more fun to read in some ways! As a play, and a book it was very popular, and still is. To me, it was a very entertaining book. It talked about a large variety of things, from World War II, to the depression, sexual thoughts actions as a young man, and what it is like to live in such a large family at such a terrible time. It made me more and more interested every page. If I had to rate this book from one to ten, I would give it a ten. As for you, it depends on what you like. This book can reach to wide range of people. Whether you are a student, a fan of theater, or just an adult who likes to read something different, this book is for you! By far, the book Brighton Beach Memoirs is a very emotional, well written, and overall amazing book.
