I love a good fake marriage story. It's one of my favorite tropes. After reading Book 3 Love Letters from a Gangsta, I really wanted to check out the Elder couple and see what their love story was like, especially because I loved Book 3 so much. However, it quickly became evident that this narrative ride wasn't going to be as fun or quite what I was expecting. I don’t like it when it takes forever for the major trope to happen. But this is not a romance. This is a Romantic Fiction, so knowing that makes it easier to process the story.

Since this is not a romance, we have to indulge:

😑 teenage smexcapades is not my scene. I dont want to read about 18 yos busting 🥜. Yet, unfortunately, those chapters take up space and pull focus from the couple I'm interested in. I don't want to read about Khari and Couture's knot-headed choices.

😑 the main couple finally getting together in some semblance of a relationship by 48% of a long book made their romance feel it was moving at a glacial pace and for no reason.

😑halfway through the book, and we are still getting "platonic marriage" dialogue or "oh, are you still with her" (her = the not really GF but Prime's GF so OW) convos after dick down sessions.

😑 by 60% we finally get to the fake marriage and Prime wants to "make the fake marriage real" but then he also has a dilemma because he tosses out a "I'm giving you one more chance to act right and we are together" style promise to the lame GF-but-not-really-GF-but-how-does-that-work-bc-now-you-have-a-wife-chick. A chick that you won't kick out until she messes up one more time. Sooooo where's the romance between Lisara and Prime in all this? good question. I saw none of the teachings Lequay spoke of learning from Prime with Lisara. heck Lisara has a sugar daddy she actually sleeps with for majority of the book. I don't have a sentimental takeaway about Lisara from this book either.

😀“Talking bad on my wife’s name is like talking bad on mine" is a great line, but it comes so late in the story that it doesn't hit hard. Another major issue is the hindrance and interference with the main love story by having the eldest son's chapters. Once again we have to read about his smex scene, bad choices etc in extreme details. So right when we feel momentum with Lis and Prime, it screeches to a halt to deal with his 18-year-old shenanigans

Finished the story, but it wasn't as much fun as Book 3. It had twists and turns, but how the relationship unfolded just didn't scream great romance. Honestly, if I had read this one first, I'm unsure if I would have made it to the 3rd Book. ...more "
