"Judges: 1.75/5. Repetitive as ever, Israel is back at it doing their very best at upsetting God in all the worst ways: worshipping other gods, breaking oaths, committing heinous acts against women and their fellow Israelites, the whole nine yards. This begins the cycle of God subjecting them, as punishment, to the oppression of others. A Judge (ruler) comes in to save them. But then they fall again. Sigh. Repeat." Aug 25, 2025 07:11PM

Michael J. Sandel
“Other animals can make sounds, and sounds can indicate pleasure and pain. But language, a distinctly human capacity, isn´t just for registering pleasure and pain. It´s about declaring what is just and what is unjust, and distinguishing right from wrong. We don´t grasp these things silently, and then put words to them; language is the medium through which we discern and deliberate about the good.”
Michael J. Sandel, Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do?

“The way things are does not determine the way they ought to be”

Amor Towles
“After all, what can a first impression tell us about someone we’ve just met for a minute in the lobby of a hotel? For that matter, what can a first impression tell us about anyone? Why, no more than a chord can tell us about Beethoven, or a brushstroke about Botticelli. By their very nature, human beings are so capricious, so complex, so delightfully contradictory, that they deserve not only our consideration, but our reconsideration—and our unwavering determination to withhold our opinion until we have engaged with them in every possible setting at every possible hour.”
Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow

“Justice is not only about the right way to distribute things. It is also about the right way to value things.”
Michael J. Sandel, Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do

David George Haskell
“But, to love nature and to hate humanity is illogical. Humanity is part of the whole. To truly love the world is also to love human ingenuity and playfulness. Nature does not need to be cleansed of human artifacts to be beautiful or coherent. Yes, we should be less greedy, untidy, wasteful, and shortsighted. But let us not turn responsibility into self-hatred. Our biggest failing is, after all, lack of compassion for the world. Including ourselves.”
David George Haskell
