I feel like this is a book tailored to my liking — imaginative hard sci-fi, aroace coded main character (debatable but I will get to that later), FRIENDSHIP, hope for humanity, etc. etc. I think I first heard about this book like early last year-ish, when I found out how fun audiobooks can be and started to look for more recommendations. Project Hail Mary appears in almost all of those rec lists and four out of five people will mention it in their top five audiobooks of all time. I added the book to my to-read list, but it wasn't until this year when audible went on sale did I finally get my hands on a copy. And GOSH was I blown away. It exceeded all my expectations, and then some. I am so glad I went into it completely blind, which made the unravelling of the mystery extra fun. The story starts with a guy waking up from a coma without any memory having to figure out who he is and what he's doing there. That's pretty much all I can say without getting into spoiler territory. I will now spoiler tag the following parts of my review that contain some of the most important plot points in the book.

(view spoiler)[After the guy remembers who he is (Ryland Grace, school teacher and former scientist) and what he has to do (on a spaceship trying to solve the Petrova line problem that is causing the sun to die out resulting in a new ice age for Earth), the story takes a twist when an unexpected character joins Grace's quest. And here comes the fan favorite (rightfully so) — ROCKY THE ERIDIAN <333 Rocky is an alien from the planet Erid, also sent into space to find a solution to the Petrova problem threatening his own solar system. I applaud Andy Weir's ability to write a character that's technically A ROCK and make him so charismatic and fun to read. His interactions with Grace were definitely the highlight of this book. Their friendship is so genuine and believable, and it's pretty much what saves both of their planets in the end. YAY! The power of friendship triumphs all! Big win for non-romantic girlies like me! Aside from the beautiful friendship between Grace and Rocky, this book has a "Problem -> Solution" rhythm/formula to it that I found incredibly satisfying. And all the science-y stuff was written in a way that anyone can easily understand, no matter your familiarity with the terms and equations being talked about. The comatose induced amnesia narrative was such a good way to show flashbacks in an interesting way that allows the readers to figure out what was going on along with the main character, which makes the twist at the end a punch in the gut and all the more shocking. I love a good subverted white savior trope.

Ray Porter is an extraordinary narrator. His performance completely sold the book. He was so good I got the first Bobiverse audiobook immediately after my Project Hail Mary read through. This is definitely one of those rare instances where the audiobook is superior than the print book in every way possible (except for the fact that the print book has a picture of what the Hail Mary looks like at the beginning of the book). I just don't think this book would have been as enjoyable in print. And the special effects they did on Rocky's voice made the listening experience so fun! I wish Ray Porter gets to have a cameo in the movie. (hide spoiler)]

Speaking of, I absolutely can't wait for the film! March 2026 can't come sooner. For the record, I think the casting for Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) and Stratt (Sandra Hüller) are absolutely GOD-TIER, and I know some will say that Gosling's too attractive to be Grace, but Ryan Gosling has always been "just some guy" to me, which was why he was perfect for Ken (and will be perfect for Ryland).

I'm going to end my review here, but I know I have a lot more to say after my second readthrough of the book, so I'll be coming back real soon :D (I haven't brought up the aroace headcanon yet, but I will save that for the next review) ...more "
