I think my experience with this book is well summarized by these two feelings I had as I read:

Overall, I unexpectedly really enjoyed this book! I wouldn't usually go for scifi, but I've discovered that all you have to do is make the aliens bacteria and I'm on board the rocket. I've seen a review mention that the book seems to be written to appeal to nonscifi readers, which might be true since it worked pretty well for me and I tend to Not Enjoy scifi. A lot of things in this book worked really well in my opinion, it was a solid read if you don't need to love the characters. Because the characters suck lol. Read it for the bacteria guys.

First off, the most glaring criticism of this book is the insufferable ass narrator and the dumb fuckery he brings to the page and the galaxy. Why did he have to be first contact please it could've been anyone else and they would've been better. Ryland Grace I hate you. Ryland Grace I want you dead. Ryland Grace I'm glad you're going to (view spoiler) I'm an American who hates Americans but I've never hated one as much as Ryland fucking Grace. I hate him to the moon and back- you can measure that distance in meters miles feet inches kilometers and make every imaginable dumb comment about it. Ryland fucking Grace is the most insufferable average white guy to teach middle school science. He isn't even fundamentally a bad person, or necessarily that bad of a narrator when it comes to storytelling (I had an issue here and there, but voerall fine) but his personality sucked. It is to this books benefit that I am a hater and chose to indulge in hating him and have fun with it because other people probably dropped the book over his dumbass words like heck/fudge as a grown man and the litany of unecessary comments on what units he uses or thinks in. Okay, truly it is not that deep but I have never in my life dealt with so obnoxious a narrator in an otherwise fine book??

The premise of the book was good!!! The book definitely handled them satisfactorily for me. I really liked the central plot with the Astrophage, that was incredibly interesting to learn more about. Again it's largely a I Was Really Excited About The Bacteria thing. I liked the panspermia concept that was mentioned from time to time, and I liked a lot how it came back in the ending. The "storytelling" of the book was also solid! I love a nonlinear narrative, and it was utilizzed well in the Hail Mary. The amnesia, the flashes of memories did well to slowly reveal information to the reader, and definitely worked towards the investement factor of the book- I got invested enough to stay up to read this book, which almost automatically gives it a 4 star rating tbh. At times, the memories were a little too conveniently timed, with a chapter ending with Ryland having a question, and a memory containing the straightforward answer immediately following. Still, Weir held off on giving explanation too fast towards the end of the book and it really helped. It was fun to learn about our protagonist through his space adventures and the years that led up to him being on the ship.

The worldbuilding was fine; I wasn't deeply interested in the Eridians, but I don't have major complaints about the way they were designed. I was a little confused on the tunnel systems going on but that's okay. The early communication between Rocky and Ryland I didn't like but made peace with, and overall their friendship was cute.
