Hidden among us is a coven of witches, united in their protection of the country and fighting against dark magical forces and spiritual beings that are attempting to do them harm. Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, has been in action since it’s founding member Anne Boleyn and having been through recent wars and divisions within the Coven itself, they’re in a precarious position. Not ideal when members begin seeing visions of the great demon, Leviathan returning to wreak havoc in the world. Five witches who have been friends since childhood will have to reunite to fight the forces of evil but they’ll begin to realise that not everyone in the coven has the best intentions in mind.

This book is so cleverly written, combining a great premise with social commentary and really smart comedic moments. I loved the fact that this was set in the UK and the normality of women trying to bring up moody teenagers and navigating romantic relationships whilst also trying to hide their powers and bring down demons made this book so charming. I adored all the characters particularly the kindness and strength in Niamh, and her care of young coven member Theo.

The social commentary is really powerful and doesn’t feel too forced, there’s really moving and empowering moments and well presented discussions of transphobia and homophobia but it weaves very seamlessly into the plot. Overall this was such a fun read, the characters, setting, action and comedy really sold this one to me and I’m really looking forward to reading the sequel. A 4 star read for me.
