This book was sold to me as a dark academia, academic rivals to lovers, found family murder mystery with a magical twist. What I got was several characters, who are interesting on paper, but so, SO boring and unlikeable. I'm accustomed to having povs I want to skip in multi-pov books, but never before have I wanted to skip every single one. The dynamics were drab. None of these people like each other, all they talk about is how much they mistrust each other. I liked Reina, but she barely appears. I liked Parisa, but the femme-fatale act very quickly became repetitive and annoying. Tristan seems interesting, but generally unlikeable. Couldn't tell you anything about Callum. The only semi-interesting relationship/characters were Libby and Nico, but their bickering seemed less like angst and mutual pining than just tiresome bickering. I appreciate a slowburn, but the fire wasn't even lit. When you compare this to other popular YA multi-povs, such as Six of Crows, it looks weak and uncohesive.

There's no humour. Everyone speaks like they're in a Lana Del Ray song or one of those pretentious tumblr poets. I kept having to reread paragraphs and go back pages because i genuinely hadn't a clue what these people were talking about, or how their magic worked, or what was going on. Everything, from the magic to the rare pieces of action seemed vague and misty. At one point i didn't even realise they were under attack until a page into said attack. I literally felt stupid reading it and not understanding it. One thing i can't abide is a book that tries to prove its smarter than me, and I'm glad to see here that other people felt the same way.

This book is so mindnumbingly boring. There's interesting introductions and a small sliver of action near the beginning, and from there until page 178 NOTHING. HAPPENS. All they do is wander around this big house, take science lessons, and talk about how much they don't like each other. I spent 178 pages waiting for it to get good, and got nothing.

I've only ever had two DNFs my whole life; Sense and Sensibility, bc I was 11 and didn't understand the language, and the second Twilight book, no explanation needed. This book is the third.

Some people love this book, and I'm happy for them. But if you're like me and you don't want to read about pretentious A-holes complaining about each other in poetic turn of phrase, don't bother. ...more "
