" For my 3rd nine weeks independent reading project, I read Allegiant (the third book in the Divergent series) by Veronica Roth. I also read Divergent and Insurgent the first and second books in the series by Veronica Roth. I liked Insurgent and Diver For my 3rd nine weeks independent reading project, I read Allegiant (the third book in the Divergent series) by Veronica Roth. I also read Divergent and Insurgent the first and second books in the series by Veronica Roth. I liked Insurgent and Divergent much more than Allegiant. I liked Divergent more because it introduced Tris and Tobias’ relationship, and there was more cute and romantic things going on between them. I got to read a book packed with action, romance, and huge plot twists, with Divergent. Insurgent was my second favorite book, because even though Tris betrays Tobias they reconcile at the end of the book. There were also a lot of plot twists in the book; I would never have guessed any of them that happened. Allegiant was my least favorite, because it was a lot harder for me to stick with it. Tris, Tobias, Christina, Uriah, and a few others are out in the real world now. They learn that their little universe with the five factions that are falling apart, are part of something much bigger than anything they could have imagined. I did like reading about Tris’ mother through her mother’s journals and I liked learning a lot more about what it means to be Divergent. I thought it was a little bit far-fetched that an experiment could so wrong and have such a disastrous effect on the personalities and beliefs of so many people. The results of the experiment were that people who were affected by it had to be contained in their own little worlds. Each of the little worlds are monitored very closely by the Bureau, or a lot of people who were not affected by the experiment which caused so many people’s lives to changed forever. The people who were unaffected are called genetically pure. The last thing I really do not like about Insurgent and Allegiant is all of the betrayals and fighting going on between all of the characters.
One of the principal characters in Allegiant is Tris, or Beatrice. Tris affects the story in all of the books by giving the reader a clear view of what is happening. For example, Tris could always tell when she was inside of simulator and she knew how to remove herself from the simulator. Most of the other characters do not have the high levels of reasoning and common sense that Tris has, and could not have escaped all of the simulators Tris did. In Allegiant, the book is told from Tobias and Tris’s point of view. In one situation they both disagree on whether or not this girl is lying, but Tobias’s judgment is clouded by his desire to get revenge on the Bureau, because the Bureau tried to destroy Abnegation and some of Dauntless to keep a secret safe. Tris’s judgment is not clouded because she realizes what is important, and she also does not go with the first statement she told. Tris realizes that the girl could be lying and wants to get a second opinion, Tris ends up being right about the girl. I wish I empathized with Tris, having her sort of sixth sense about things would be really helpful. Another one of the principal characters is Tobias. Tobias affects the story when he is the boyfriend of Tris and the reader also gets to see his point of view in Allegiant. He also affects the story because his quick assumptions and not rational thinking really emphasize Tris’s rational thinking and reasoning.
One of the quotes that really stood out to me was, “every faction loses something when it gains a virtue: the Dauntless, brave but cruel; the Erudite, intelligent but vain; the Amity, peaceful but passive; the Candor, honest by inconsiderate; the Abnegation, selfless by stifling.” (Roth 123) This quote really stuck in my head because I feel like it is completely true. If a person becomes so focused on one personality trait, that they become obsessed with that single trait, then they will lose another good personality trait. The author can demonstrate their talent through a quote if the quote is a powerful well thought out one that applies to real life situations too. ...more "
