The series of these books are called The Shadow Children. A common theme within this series is the government has a law that families are only able to have two children as the country is trying to create a perfect utopia. One of the main reasons for the two children per family law is because of fear of the country running out of food. The books tell the adventures of children who were born as a third child and either are in hiding, getting fake identities, or helping other third children who are continuously escaping the population police. This book's lexile level is 800L. In the book Among the Brave the main characters Trey and Mark are on a mission to get Mark's brother Luke, who is a third child like Trey, back from the population police. It is up to the population police to find the third children and capture and imprison them.

In this book one of the main characters Trey was pretty scared to go save Luke. Leading up to that point he got more courage in himself and realized that he was brave like Mark. In the beginning he thought he was a coward, “ He, Trey - the biggest coward in the world, a third child who’d spent his whole life hiding…” (pg. 102) and in the ending of the book he was brave “I was brave here before, Trey told himself. I can be brave again.“ (pg.106) and when he says that he gains courage to save Luke and save the other kids like him that are being captured by the population police saving their lives.

I liked this series of books until the end of this book. I feel in Among the Brave the author has taken too long to get to the point and the ending of this series. I probably will not read the next book because I have lost interest in this series. Although my favorite part of this book is when he thinks to himself and finds the courage to do things because he is a shy person. This author has a good way of writing these books in a first person point of view but I wish it was more interesting. This book was pretty easy to read for me so next time I would like a different type of book. I think that somebody in 6-7th grade could read this book because it is pretty easy to understand. ...more "
