The author is Alan Gratz( My favorite author). There are 2 perspectives of the book. Brandon who is a 9 year old in the world trade center with his dad 2001, and reshmina who is an 11 year old in afghanistan in 2019. It switches perspectives every chapter. Brandon: Brandon got suspended from school for punching a kid in the nose so he had to go to work in the north twin tower with his dad.He had broken a friend's toy and snuck away from his dad to buy a new one. While in the elevator the first plane hits and he and the other people in the elevator are trapped. They break out and Brandon tries to go up to his dad. On the 93rd floor he finds half of the floor destroyed and he begins to fall when a man named Richard catches him. They head back down to the ground and everyone in the building is trying to escape in the stairs so they are stuck for a while. When they get to the bottom the building collapses down on them. Brandon walks around in the dark until he finds Richard and two other survivors and they escape. They go to Richard's house and they find out that Brandon's dad was killed when the building collapsed. Richard adopts him 1 year later. Reshmina: Reshmina is out in the woods with her brother pasoon collecting firewood. When they are finished they go home and find an american soldier and some afghan soldiers searching the houses in her village to find taliban weapons. This was a trap set up by the Taliban to ambush the soldiers so the Taliban killed all of them. Reshmina finds the one surviving American who is badly injured and brings him back home( You find out later that the American is actually Brandon). Her brother leaves to tell the Taliban and Reshmina chases after him and tries to talk him out of it. It does not work and he tells the Taliban and they destroy the village. The Americans show up and save the villagers but they could not save the houses which were all destroyed.
Something The author does is he usually leaves the chapters at cliff hangers to make the reader want to read more. He makes things suspenseful as another way to put it. Like one time in the book when Brandon was about to fall out of the building it said he was grabbed by something and he saw a familiar face. It made me think it was his dad. I read through another chapter of reshminas story super fast just to find out it was just Richard who he had met that morning.
I would recommend this book to people who like history and war books. My reasoning for this is because it talks a lot about the war in Afghanistan and Who bombed the towers and why. I liked the book because it was very action packed and its narroraters were around my age. The book could be a little confusing for someone who has never read a multiperspective book before but other than that they should be okay. It was A medium difficulty reading it. I did not struggle with anything. It wasn't super predictable or anything. I liked the ending because reshmina totally rejected her brother when he tried to be nice to her again. A connection it had with another book was that it relates to another alan gratz book called refugee where it swaps perspectives in different times that affect the characters later on. ...more "
