I've seen Lapvona quite often while visiting our local bookstore and was intrigued- never picked it up, though, because I was somehow intimidated by its newness and straight forward dark cover. My journey started when I found it on an online second-hand market place and decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed. I have already heard that it has somewhat grotesque themes in focus and came prepared.
I'm still not quite sure what exactly to think of this book, because a huge chunk of my thoughts still remain scattered all over the place, but I'm sure that I liked the setting the most. I wouldn't usually rotate towards a medieval fiefdom type story but it slightly reminded me of one of my favorite movies: The witch. The way Ottessa Moshfegh writes in this is so fluid and natural, the story tracks well and I lost myself and my sense of time while reading.
The themes were disgusting and sometimes disturbing at a rate where I had to set the book down for a bit to take a breath to even out my forehead that was in deep wrinkles of how much I had to frown. Sometimes, I wondered, if somebody in the train were to look over my shoulder and read what it said (like, I don't know, the grape scene?) they would stand up, take their stuff and change seats. It was dark, and I enjoyed that. Maybe trigger warnings would have been great but sometimes it do be like that.
Even though I was thinking mid-book that the story would end a certain way, I was still kind of surprised at the ending and don't know what to think about it. The characters all are unlikable to some extent. You would expect that among this range of characters there would be one that would suit one's palate but, I think, because of the raw and macabre way their vices are focussed, it's really hard to like them. It's in between dislike and pity. I like this, though. No one is spotless- quite the opposite.
Would I recommend this? Depends on who is asking, because the book IS quite fucked and focusses topics that are potentially triggering and disgusting. But if I know the person well enough, maybe, yes, I would. My final words about this book are: what the actual fuck man. ...more "
