this book was so good and so intense to read. it’s definitely one of my new favorites. but that ending tho- oh my lord. that was an emotional train wreck. the only factor (despite the obvious disappointment that 4/5 characters died) that im upset abothis book was so good and so intense to read. it’s definitely one of my new favorites. but that ending tho- oh my lord. that was an emotional train wreck. the only factor (despite the obvious disappointment that 4/5 characters died) that im upset about in that ending is the final chapter. why was it in some random by-stander’s POV instead of beanfield’s? i think the reader would have had a more enjoyable and gratifying conclusion if it had been through beanfield’s perspective. maybe i understand because you were supposed to get a grip of how oblivious the public is kept from the reality of the war by reading 3 brief pages through an on-looker of beanfield’s return? but still it was a disappointing end to and amazingly dark and complicated novel. otherwise i adored the book, and gilly was by far my favorite i was so heart broken, yet satisfied, by his death, because he finally got the answers he had been looking for. it’s just a shame that the only person who made it did not really come to understand as much about the salamanders as the people who died did....more
