Gender Identity: Child Readers and Library Collections
Children's books that break gender stereotypes.
Children’s literature plays a crucial role in Gender Identity: Child Readers and Library Collections
Children's books that break gender stereotypes.
Children’s literature plays a crucial role in the development of gender identity of girls and boys. Children tend to automatically accept the models that are presented to them and consequently to identify themselves in characters that belong to their gender group. This is particularly relevant for “professions.” Children are used to imagine themselves in very stereotyped “professional roles” (e.g., girls as cooks, seamstresses, nurses, etc. and boys as pilots, mechanics, doctors, etc.). The difficulties in breaking these traditional models are caused especially by repetitive and stereotyped roles given to female characters in illustrated books for children. These traditional models of representation of gender identities are still predominant in many European countries, causing and maintaining gender inequality and gender violence. For this reason, it is very important to strengthen gender-positive children’s literature, by proposing books with characters that break gender stereotypes (women and men in the same professions, mothers and fathers sharing housework, etc.). Nowadays and especially in some European countries, this kind of children’s literature can represent a very important educational tool on crucial matters such as social inclusion, integration, and respect of all differences.
