this is extremely indicative of kakeru's later development, and the part of him i find the most fascinating. he largely rails against being told what to do but instinctively looks to others when he's lost and frustrated. so by the end when he's coming to his own conclusions, i put so much weight to them when there's no hint of suggestion from anyone else, bc kakeru worked so hard to find the words to understand and describe himself.

Jacqueline Harpman
“Being beautiful, was that for men?'
'Yes. Some women say that it is for ourselves. What on earth can we do with it? I could have loved myself whether I was hunchbacked or lame, but to be loved by others, you had to be beautiful.”
Jacqueline Harpman, I Who Have Never Known Men

Richard Adams
“All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.”
Richard Adams, Watership Down

Maggie Stiefvater
“He was brother to a liar and brother to an angel, son of a dream and son of a dreamer.”
Maggie Stiefvater, The Dream Thieves

“I will say this once, angel, for I feel you should be warned. No man alive has ever loved a woman the way that I love you, and I would rather die, damned as I am, than disgrace us both with the pitiful, unrequited performance of my heart.”
Tahereh Mafi, Every Spiral of Fate
