Book cover for Eileen
My father had warned me when I’d started there at age twenty-one, naive beyond reproach, that the most dangerous individuals in a prison are not the criminals but the very people who work there. I can confirm this to be true. Those were ...more

I find it interesting how Ottessa Moshfegh is always inserting relevant social commentary despite having aggressive and off-putting main characters. There is a moral gray and messiness to her writing that almost mirrors the blurred moral lines we come across in real life. Prison systems are deeply and inherently flawed, and in the U.S. they offer no real chance at reformation because they were specifically designed with a different purpose. To control, to exploit, to cage... Eileen is also acknowledging that even she, as an employee, is probably more dangerous than the youth confined at Moorehead. Hmmm. Moorehead... Reminds me of the Moors murders... Intentional?

“I would say, some people are like constellations that only touch the earth for a season.”
Madeline Miller, Circe

“We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.”
Madeline Miller, The Song of Achilles

“But in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth. Such a constellation was he to me.”
Madeline Miller, Circe

Robert Jordan
“Any fool knows men and women think differently at times, but the biggest difference is this. Men forget, but never forgive; women forgive, but never forget.”
Robert Jordan

Ottessa Moshfegh
“Sleep felt productive. Something was getting sorted out. I knew in my heart—this was, perhaps, the only thing my heart knew back then—that when I'd slept enough, I'd be okay. I'd be renewed, reborn. I would be a whole new person, every one of my cells regenerated enough times that the old cells were just distant, foggy memories. My past life would be but a dream, and I could start over without regrets, bolstered by the bliss and serenity that I would have accumulated in my year of rest and relaxation.”
Ottessa Moshfegh, My Year of Rest and Relaxation
