"Book of the New Sun is, perhaps, my top 5 of all time. I realised recently I had never really read Wolfe beyond that though. So I'm going to absorb these novellas, then perhaps move onto Litany and Short Sun too.
Everything he writes is so esoteric yet grounded in cold-bitterness at the same time. It's such a strange visage to penetrate." — Jun 04, 2026 10:27AM

"Been awhile since I've really been able to sit down and read. A slow road of trying to fix what's broken upstairs :) been focused on films, video games & my own writing but now I'm working my way back in with my favourites!
Le Guin - whether it's short, long, philosophical, non-fiction, fantasy, sci fi whatever - is a true master. But it's always amusing to remind myself how goddamn much she wrote." — Jun 04, 2026 10:26AM

“By the use of the language of sorrow I had for the time being obliterated my sorrow—so powerful is the charm of words, which for us reduces to manageable entities all the passions that would otherwise madden and destroy us.”

“She was a tall woman with a wide smile,
good tits and a way of licking mayonnaise out the corner of her mouth which suggested she might be
equally good at licking mayonnaise out the corner of yours.”

“I fell for it, she told herself in despair. All the fucking and the fighting. Despite everything I promised myself, I fell for it too.”

“Behind all this bad behaviour was an insecurity magnificent in scope, metaphysical in nature. Space was big, and the boys from Earth were awed despite themselves by the things they found there: but worse, their science was a mess. Every race they met on their way through the Core had a star drive based on a different theory. All those theories worked, even when they ruled out one another's basic assumptions. You could travel between the stars, it began to seem, by assuming anything [. . . .]
It was affronting to discover that. So when they fetched up on the edge of the Tract, looked it in the eye, and began to despatch their doomed entradas, the Earthlings were hoping to find, among other things, some answers. They wondered why the universe, which seemed so harsh on top, was underneath so pliable. Anything worked. Wherever you looked, you found. They were hoping to find out why.”

“It is possible I already had some presentiment of my future. The locked and rusted gate that stood before us, with wisps of river fog threading its spikes like the mountain paths, remains in my mind now as the symbol of my exile. That is why I have begun this account of it with the aftermath of our swim, in which I, the torturer’s apprentice Severian, had so nearly drowned.”
