I had to work through the first few chapters because they are filled with new people, new world building and a different society. Once Rowl shows up I stopped working hard to understand what was going on and fell into a more enjoyable reading process. It just keeps getting better with the turn of every page. Also, I am going back and forth between listening to the audio version and reading it on my Kindle, which helps with the new names, places, and fantasy world building.

Written in 3rd person, this reminds me more of the style of Codex Alera than it does the Dresden Files. Goodie for me...I think CA is an amazing series. I love the language that s given to us in this book. The ships are not cloaked, they are shrouded. Rowl, Mirl, and the other felines in this book have their own society and their own language. Only humans who have learned to speak in the cats hissing and mewling language can communicate with them. The cats are arrogant and believe themselves to be far superior to humans and their silly society. So far the cats have their time in the story, but they are not the center of all the action. This is based on the lives of Lady Gwen Lancaster, who comes from a Society family and leaves home to join her cousin Benedict in joining the Service. Also, Captain Grimm, who leads his crew aboard the merchant ship named Predator. Lastly, we have Bridget Tagwynn who comes from an old distinguished family who has lost most of their money and actually works and labors in the last of the old family businesses, the Tagwynn Vattery, to maintain what they have left of their dwindling fortune. Aged 17, Bridget finds herself being forced to fulfill a promise her father made for the honor of the House of Tagwynn . This promise forces her to leave home for a 2-year period to honor his promise. Bridget travels with feline friend, Rowl. All these characters find their lives entwined in the well crafted story woven by Jim Butcher.

I do recommend this book. Mr. Butcher has plans for the series to be either a 3-book, 6-book, or 9-book series, depending on how the readers react to this new venture. I'm betting it'll end up being a 9-book thrill-ride! ...more "
