While staying with her aunt, Pattyn starts to discover who she really is and how love actually works. Just like in Crank, when Pattyn returns home, her new life seems to crumble in around her. Another “do-over” that is again worth reading over-and-over, but I am reading this do-over to help me make connections between all of the Hopkins novels I plan to read over the next year.

Pattyn’s family is Mormon.

Level Two
1. Why does Pattyn feel like an outcast within her family and church?
Pattyn feels like she is different than everyone that she lives around because she does not believe completely in the Mormon teachings, which causes her to reach out and sometimes have dreams of matters Mormons’’ feel is inappropriate to discuss.
2. Why does Pattyn enjoy shooting a gun so much?
When Pattyn shoots a gun, even at tin cans, she feels she has control over her life. She feels that fate plays a role in every aspect of her life, but when she shoots, she is “God.” No one or nothing can affect her.

1. Do you believe that in today’s society, that women should be placed below men? That wives should obey every rule created by their husbands? Why or Why not?
In the day in time, women are defiantly progressing to achieve full equality with male figures in society. But due to Pattyn’s family’s religion, there is a strict rule for men to control their entire family. They are the leaders. The dominant role. In the year 2003, Kate DiCamillo wrote The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread. It is a Newbery Medal winning children's fantasy book, and it has also been created into an animated film this past year. Being the first book in a set of four, this novel contains a story line of a mouse and a princess. DiCamillo writes in somewhat of a mysterious and old-fashioned style, which gives this fantasy story a little twist that I enjoyed. Beginning with, "within the walls of a castle, with the birth of a mouse,” the main character, Despereaux Tilling, is a newborn baby mouse, who is oddly born with a small body, huge ears, and his eyes open. From birth, Despereaux is different from all other mice. Reading books. Not being frightened. Talking To humans. This tiny mouse’s bravery drew me in from the beginning because it showed me to reach out and be different from the others around me. Despereaux’s “unmouselike” spirit also leads him to the love of his life, Princess Pea, but ultimately causes him to be banished to the rat-filled dungeon. This novel is a wonderful tale of love and forgiveness; DiCamillo is a true romantic author. Despereaux’s love for Princess Pea is courtly, much like a medieval knight, and this love makes him desire to be a better person. The feeling of true love that this tiny mouse experiences made me realize how important it is to have love within our lives. Besides the plot of true love, DiCamillo brings in Adventure and Peril into this book. Despereaux must brave the dungeon with its foul band of rats, and Miggery Sow, an orphan girl, who has intentions to kidnap and replace Princess Pea with herself. This sci- fi and medieval type of excitement was defiantly what kept this novel an instant page-turner. ...more "
