Genesis: having been raised Catholic(-ish), many of the stories from Genesis were familiar to me. Being arguably the most famous book in the Bible, it clearly had a lot of influence on more recent literature. Aside from the hundreds of names that are featured, the book is rife with bits and pieces, shorter and longer quotes, that one would now find in the likes of Moby Dick, Blood Meridian, East of Eden, The Handmaid's Tale, etc. The list goes on. It did prompt me to think: how many of these authors have only read Genesis and called it a day? It talks of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham and all of his wives/kids, Isaac and all of his kids, Jacob and Esau, and Joseph (not THAT Joseph, this is Old Testament, people), who - like his dad - pulled a mean ass trick on his brother(s) but turned out all right in the end. Also, God is weird telling all of these people where to go all the time and casually smiting peeps he thinks are Wicked. Justice for my boy Er, who strutted the stage for ~3 lines and was heard no more of. Time for Exodus and some Moses action!!

Exodus: God is still an asshole, lol. This Book was kind of interesting, since it had more stories I remember from childhood and fewer names, making it easier to follow than Genesis for the most part. Essentially the story revolves around Moses leading the children of Israel out of Egypt. This could be easy, since God is.. God, but God is also a douchebag. God has Moses put all these plagues on the Egyptians, eventually resorting to killing ALL FIRSTBORNS, which is sort of unfair since (1) God is making the Pharaoh do this ("God hardened the Pharaoh's heart") and (2) the people Moses is trying to save are basically enslaved. Anyways, eventually the Pharaoh begs Moses to leave with his cursed kids only to follow him with an entire army because *checks notes* God wants that? Moses then famously parts the Red Sea and God makes sure the Pharaoh and his army all drown. Yay. God then tells Moses that his people need to do 1 million things for rituals, they can't work on Sundays, and he makes the famous tablets with the 10 commandments, only there are way more. By the way, all of those self-righteous Christians with their asshole attitudes and racism, go read Exodus 23 and then tell me you live according to the word of God. Fun fact, this Book features the Ark of the Covenant, which I knew from the first Indiana Jones movie, which was fun and I will watch again. God then almost decides to literally murder everyone because they made a golden calf to worship him, even though he explicitly (only) told Moses that wasn't cool, but then Moses said that that was not very swag money and God chilled out. This guy (God) is bipolar AF. Fun one, onto Leviticus with more Moses. ...more "
