And the thing is idk how much i ruined the experience for myself by reading it slowly when this is absolutely supposed to be read in like a weekend, but still, there's no saving the ending sadly . On the bright side, i now don't need to decide wether the endless pop culture references will be detrimental to the book in the long run

Anyways let's talk about it. The concept is great. It has this satiric tone that i loved and it instantly hooked me. Like i said, i don't know how much it altered my perception the fact that i read it slowly, but from the first controversy the book felt like it was dragging on a bit, but it was still very interesting, the author nails the cliffhangers on every chapter. Sadly, by the next Twitter controversies and then the Instagram mentions it started to drag on again and thennnn the ending cameeee and it was so random ???

I wished Athena as a person had been explored more, though it would've been difficult with June being the sole and unreliable narrator. Maybe we could've had something as a double perspective where Athena's ghost is commenting stuff but none of them are to be relied on a lot, to keep that "Athena wasn't great either" thing, which i loved. It's awful what June is doing by impersonating and stealing Athena's work, but she constantly brings up how she despised Athena and that is confirmed as something that is sort of true by a couple other people sort of hating her aswell. So. Who was Athena then? What else did she do? What motivated her? And who could've been better to tell us than Athena herself? She remains such a mystery and its a shame truly

Then, June. I wished she had gone bonkers tbh. (Like, more than she did) I love all the flaws she has that make her such an awful person, and she is so hateable but so entertaining too, and all the while i was reading i was just praying for her downfall. Said downfall does come eventually but its VERY random, so much so i will just skip to that (my reviews are always all over the place i'm sorry)

I wished what ultimately took June down was herself. A random character she wronged in the beginning coming for her at the very end came out of nowhere, and its clear to me both are dumb as hell. You're really telling me Candice just casually got access to June's account through her publicist ???? Who is she and why isn't she fired. And then, how did June not notice that Athena "talking" to her was a recording ???? It was so obvious, idc she was out of her mind and convinced by the paranoia that Athena's ghost or something had come for her, it's just not beliavable she wouldn't have noticed.

Apart from that, thematically, her being the cause of her own ruin would be more satisfying imo. Like yeah, she created Candice by being mean to her but it is clear Candice is awful too so it doesn't feel as personal then, cause she obviously would’ve done something similar or that same thing if it was anyone else who wronged her. I wished June had been delulu enough to think that by publishing the story of how she stole the manuscript would redeem and launch her into international fame and prestige... but then backfired horribly, it would've been funny af too. Her ending where she is just plotting and imagining how life will be like when she makes her big comeback after Candice releases her memoirs is good ig ??? I see the vision but i can't feel it. And it doesn't have much of an impact when we had already seen her plotting uselessly.

In short, i think this needed more time in the oven to really tie everything together, cause the elements for a great satire (and the modern classic label i was ready to fight for) are here, they just didn't latch onto each other very well. Three stars cause i really enjoyed it and the critic its presenting is valid af, even if the ending is disappointing ...more "
